Over 35 years experience in digital image processing applications.

  • 1979: Developed Hughes Aircraft Company's M1 Abrams Tank Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR) fire control system imaging simulation to guide hardware design.

  • 1980's: Taught graduate image processing at UC Santa Barbara.

  • 1986-88: Started and directed Institute for Technology Development's National Center for Commercialization of Space Remote Sensing at Stennis Space Center, leading research to spin-off companies, e.g., 2006 $100M Monsanto purchase of ITD's Automated Crop Information Service based on image processing.

  • 1991: Led interdisciplinary Earth Observing System Data Information System (EOSDIS) science team support to successful $1B Hughes EOSDIS proposal, credited by NASA Source Selection Board as key win criterion.

  • 1992-2002: Conceived, patented, and led Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) (http://journals.ametsoc.org/doi/pdf/10.1175/BAMS-D-12-00097.1specification, design and proposal to Raytheon's $1.5B contract, replacing four existing systems:

    • Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) Operational Line-scan System (OLS) (operational 1970-present)

    • Polar-orbiting Environmental Satellite (POES) Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) (operational 1980-present)

    • Earth Observing System (EOS) MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) (operational 1999-present); and

    • Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) (operational 1997-2013).
